We are a group of six senior medical students at Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) planning to continue a longstanding healthcare partnership in Siuna, Nicaragua, for four weeks in February 2018.
For 15 years TUSM has sent a team of medical students, physicians, and nurses to Siuna, Nicaragua, every winter to provide health care in conjunction with the non-profit organization Bridges to Community. Though 150 miles northeast of the capital Managua, the terrain is rugged, and an overland trip to Siuna takes 10 hours. Access to healthcare is poor because of this geographic isolation. TUSM teams have worked in concert with the established local health system, with the goals of providing additional medical supplies, delivering educational workshops focused on the community’s biggest needs, and learning from Nicaraguan community leaders about developing a responsible and conscientious presence in the global health community.
We will deliver care to over 1000 patients in an urgent care-style setting, instruct 40 village “health leaders” and midwives in basic healthcare topics, and engage in a month-long interchange with a pair of local physicians. Our own objectives will be to learn to diagnose local medical conditions, grapple with their management in a resource-limited environment, gain exposure to a very different healthcare system, and advance our skills in Spanish.
Where the Money Will Go:
ALL FUNDS RAISED WILL GO EXCLUSIVELY TOWARD HEALTHCARE SUPPLIES. The list of needs is long: from thermometers, blood pressure cuffs, and urine test strips to prenatal vitamins, antibiotics, and wound dressings. Without these materials there is little that we would have to offer our patients. None of the funds will be applied toward travel expenses.
If we fall short of our goal we will adjust our supply lists to the bare essentials, and do the best we can with them. If we exceed the goal, the excess funds will go to purchase more complete educational materials for the village health leaders and midwives.
We thank you for your support! Sincerely, Katie, Caroline, Sam, Elizabeth, Nishani, and Rebecca (TUSM Class of 2018)
