2021 Conference: Transforming Bodies of Power: Organize, Amplify, Lead

This year’s theme, Radical Optimism: Transforming Positivity into Power, will highlight how optimism can be wielded as a formidable tool to bring about change and action on a global scale. Living through a pandemic has forced us to innovate, and in spite of the immeasurable and continued suffering experienced within our communities around the world, we have managed to find ways to maintain hope and create joy. Building from this theme of hopefulness and utilizing a gender and intersectional analytic lens, this conference will underscore the ways marginalized folks have harnessed power through positivity to continue to push for progress, such as building healthy masculinities, healing from gender-based violence, and celebrating diverse sexual and gender identities across borders. The 2021 Conference on Gender and International Affairs will show how optimism itself has proven to be a functional, pragmatic tool in identifying the potential for change in international relations and further, giving us the gumption to take action.

Panels:

  • Queering International Relations
  • Bringing Feminism into International Relations: A Road to Optimism
  • Feminist Economics and Informal Labor Markets

Workshops:

  • Moving from Toxic to Healthy Masculinities
  • Gender-Based Violence: Preventing, Healing, and Accessing Justice

Why Gender?

CGIA was conceived as a response to the lack of gender analysis in curricula and programming, a deficiency that exists not only in higher education, but in the professional fields students prepare to enter.

CGIA seeks to bridge this gap through collaborative, interdisciplinary, and cross-sector efforts. As global citizens and future leaders, it is critical for students to understand the role that gender plays in decision making, ranging from interpersonal communication to public policy. Gender also interacts with other socially constructed power dynamics and aspects of identity, such as class and race, in ways that require a critical and intersectional lens to analyze and understand.

We Need Your Help!

The Conference is free and open to all, but is exclusively made possible by student fundraising. This year's CGIA builds on a six-year legacy of student organizing, education, and advocacy, and we are excited to be returning to an in-person conference in November after a year of virtual panels. 2021 CGIA will continue to emphasize inclusivity by offering live streams of the Conference for those unable to access campus.

Please help us achieve a successful return to in-person programming by donating to our campaign. We can't do it without you!
