Tisch College Student COVID Response Summer Program

Supporting Tufts student leaders in the fight against COVID-19

The spread of COVID-19 has changed how we live our daily lives and how we envision the future, as it threatens our loved ones, our local communities, and our world. There couldn’t be a more important time than now to respond and make a difference.

Tisch College has created a program to provide grants to Tufts students for summer projects that address effects of COVID-19, to encourage civic engagement in the fight against this pandemic. Some examples of current projects include funding for a Tufts School of Medicine student to 3D print PPE visors, and an undergraduate working with a team to create a tutoring program for NYC public school students.

The student response has been huge, with over 90 applications so far. We'd like to be able to provide grants to as many Tufts students as we can, and with your support, we can provide more grants for their innovative work.

The grant program was proposed by undergraduate student Alex Lein, a student in the class of 2021 who has been closely involved in its development, and will serve as the program’s student coordinator.

“I know students have been thinking about ways to address the crisis, even if many of their efforts have been hampered by social distancing, precautionary measures, and lack of available funding. Already I have been blown away by what I’ve seen from the Tufts community in response to this idea: Tisch College leadership was immediately receptive, and students from every school have already expressed interest," said Lein.

Your support will provide grants to support students in their work in our local communities, and our world. This program will fund student ideas, provide weekly virtual Tisch College office hours to answer questions, facilitate several group meetings for all stipend recipients and pair students with a Tufts alumni mentor to support their work, if they desire. Tisch College will match every gift, dollar for dollar, up to $50,000, which means your donation will go twice as far for student support right now.

"Young people are leading—at Tufts and around the world. They are the source of so many innovative ideas in our communities, including in times of crisis, and we need their energy and civic engagement now more than ever. This idea came from a student, and we are proud to develop it with students and support dozens of students from across the University this summer,” said Alan Solomont, dean of Tufts University’s Tisch College of Civic Life.
