Panhellenic Scholarship Fund
This crowdfunding project has ended, but you can still support the Panhellenic Scholarship Fund here. Thank you for your continued support!
There are currently three nationally recognized sororities who contribute to the Tufts campus and make up the broader Panhellenic community – a group of over 300 women. The option to join the tight-knit community of women offered by these three organizations gives many students a support network and healthy social outlet that they may initially struggle to find at Tufts. In addition to fostering a sense of community, joining a Panhellenic organization gives any female-identifying student on the Tufts campus the chance to participate in philanthropic efforts, take on leadership roles, and become more deeply involved in broader campus life. Unfortunately, the membership dues paid to each chapter average at about $400 a semester, creating a financial barrier to entry for many students.
We believe that every woman who wants to be a part of this supportive community should have the option, and financial aid is necessary to achieve our goal of a more inclusive and representative space. A Panhellenic Scholarship Fund will affect sorority life on campus in the following ways:
- It will allow women to go through the recruitment process knowing before they accept a bid that they can afford to join the organization of their choice.
- It will ensure that no student who wants to be a part of this vibrant circle of women is barred from entry because of the cost, and allow all women access to the personal and professional benefits that a sorority can offer.
- It will give sororities the ability to more fully integrate into the broader Tufts community since no female student is excluded.
For all these reasons and more, it is critical for the Panhellenic Council to form a scholarship fund. Sororities on Tufts’ campus can’t become the inclusive and welcoming environment they strive to be without breaking down the financial barriers.
In the Fall of 2018, we were able to cover 90% of the dues for three new members' first year in their sorority. They knew they received the scholarship before receiving a bid, so they were able to solely focus on finding their ideal community, rather than worrying about finances. The application and selection process was completely confidential from their peers as well! This was an extraordinary first step toward financial inclusivity, but the need for financial support was far greater than we could accommodate.
The Panhellenic Council is hoping to raise $3,500 to cover partial and full dues for as many women as possible during our next Fall Recruitment Cycle. We are seeking help in raising the money that these dues would cost in order to provide every woman on this campus with the opportunity to live in a sorority house with her best friends, have a Big and Little, and more importantly feel as though there is a group of women looking out for her always. By supporting the Scholarship Fund, you are empowering young women by providing access to incredible support networks.
